4-Week Pottery Wheel Intermediate Class

$280 per person. Four two-hour sessions plus a fifth week of wrap-up studio time, with 25 lbs of clay, studio time, firing and glazing all included.

Who this course is for

The Intermediate Wheel Course is for students who have finished at least one beginner wheel course and are comfortable centering about three pounds of clay. If you can center reliably and throw a basic cylinder and bowl, you are ready. If you are not sure, come to a one-time beginner class first and ask the instructor.

What you will learn

The course moves past basic forms and into scale and control. Over four weeks you will work on large-scale forms, stacked forms, bottleneck and closed forms, and plates and other flat shapes, which are harder than they look. You will also spend more time on trimming, altering a thrown form and repeating a shape consistently.

Week by week

Week 1: throwing large-scale forms. Week 2: stacked forms. Week 3: bottleneck and closed forms. Week 4: plates and flat forms. Week 5: wrap-up of final work plus extra studio time for glazing.

What is included

Four two-hour class sessions, 25 lbs of clay, studio time between classes, all firing and glazing, and one additional week for wrap-up studio time. Nothing else to buy.

How the four weeks run

Classes meet once a week at the same time, so the course is a standing commitment rather than a drop-in. We do not take drop-ins on any class. If you miss a week, talk to your instructor about using studio time to catch up.

What to wear and what to expect

Wear clothes you do not mind getting clay on; aprons are provided. Expect to make mistakes at this level — larger forms collapse, and that is part of learning where the limits are. Finished work is fired and glazed here and takes about 30 days to come back.
